Pregnancy is a beautiful time in a woman’s life and it is a wonderful journey. While the experience of growing a baby inside is amazing some of the things that come along with that awesome experience are not so awesome. All kinds of ailments come with pregnancy and there are issues you may have never experienced before in your life. With all the ailments there is not much to help while pregnant. Many options are not safe during pregnancy…But Essential Oils Are! There are certain oils to avoid and ones you want to dilute and be safe with. One of the most important things to remember is make sure you only use Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. I am going to talk about common ailments during pregnancy and what can help. First I want to tell you which oils are not recommended during pregnancy. Essential Oils not recommended during Pregnancy – Birch, Cassia, Cinnamon, Rosemary, Thyme, Wintergreen (Based on Doterra Essential Oils, there are other essential oils not recommended but they are not produced by Doterra)
Use these Essential Oils with heavy dilution and caution – Basil, Clary Sage, Fennel, Marjoram, Oregano, DDR Prime, Deep Blue, DigestZen, On Guard, Slim &Sassy, Solace, Zendocrine (Based on Doterra Essential Oils, some of these oils may affect hormones or contractions, research more before use)
Mood Swings, Stress, Depression
All of the options below can be diffused in a room, rub on your hands and smell, drop on the bottom of your feet (one drop is usually enough), and rub on wrists or behind the ears.
o Lavender is considered the Swiss army knife of essential oils. Lavender is calming, reduces stress and encourages restful sleep
o Ylang Ylang – Calming, helps with relaxing and stress reduction. (also helps with crying)
o Frankincense – aids with depression, stress, and anxiety
o Serenity (Calming Blend) – has many of the same affects as lavender. Serenity has a wonderful scent and would be great for someone who is not fond of the smell of lavender.
o Balance (Grounding Blend) – aids with anxiety nervousness, promotes tranquility and a sense of balance
o Ginger – Dilute as recommended - can apply behind ears, bottoms of the feet, or down the jaw line. Diffuse in room or rub on hands and inhale.
o Peppermint and Lavender – Diffuse in the air, rub on hands and inhale, dilute as recommended especially peppermint and can apply behind ears or bottoms of feet
o Peppermint – aids in digestive functions (dilute as recommended during pregnancy) – Rub on bottoms of feet
o Digest Zen – Ease stomach and digestion discomfort (do not use every day and use with caution during pregnancy) – Rub on bottoms of feet
o Ginger – aids with indigestion
o Blend of 2 drops lemon, 2 drops peppermint, and 3 drops sandalwood diluted in 1 tablespoon of fractionated coconut oil applied to breast bone in a clockwise motion can aid in heartburn relief.
Headaches and Back pain
o Past Tense (Headache Relief Blend) – aids with headache and migraine relief or muscle tension. Use with moderate dilution, Roll on area of tension or roll on finger then rub onto area.
o Peppermint – calms headache, also reduces fever
o Deep Blue – (Essential Oil or Rub) – use with caution/heavier dilution – relieves muscle tension, rub on area of tension. ( 3 drops to 1 tsp coconut oil)
o AromaTouch – Only for topical use, aids with relaxation, muscle aches, and tension. You can massage on painful area ( 3 drops to 1 tsp coconut oil)
o Lavender – promotes restful sleep, calming – Diffuse or massage with coconut oil on body
o Ylang Ylang – Calming and relaxing – Diffuse or massage with coconut oil on body
o Serenity – Calming, aids with insomnia, relaxing – Diffuse, spray on pillow
o Lavender and Myrrh - Apply on location - 5-10 drops of either to 1 tsp hazelnut or coconut oil
o Immortelle Blend – Supports skin at a cellular level, nourishes skin – In a roller bottle, roll on area of concern (check dilution instructions)
High blood pressure – Ylang Ylang, aids with high blood pressure, can place 3 drops in bath water and bathe twice a week
Swelling – Lemon, has antioxidant and antibacterial power and detoxifies. Place a few drops in a glass of water daily. Use Lemon and Lavender in a roller bottle with coconut oil and roll on areas on swelling (massage towards the heart)
Congestion – Breathe Blend, clears lungs and respiratory congestion. Rub on chest or diffuse in the air.
Immune Support – Frankincense and On Guard- diffuse either in the air
Essential Oils are amazing healers and all natural! When pregnant it is nice to have natural options to deal with the not fun parts of pregnancy. I researched and used my knowledge of essential oils to write this. I encourage you to continue to research more.
